Who are the people that live in co-ops?

We are members, not tenants.

We manage our housing democratically, electing a Board of Directors from among our residents. Every one of us has an equal voice in decisions about our housing community.

All of us volunteer on the committees that do our co-operative's work. We are a self-help movement. Our national and regional co-operative housing federations supply adult education, training courses and reference material to help us manage our housing.

As members of Alexander Mackenzie Housing Co-op we are required to fulfill our financial responsibilities, attend general meetings, abide by our rules and regulations, and contribute time and effort towards the successful running of the Co-op. This is a personal commitment each of us makes when we join the Co-op and we are honour-bound to fulfill that commitment. Anyone considering co-operative housing should be willing to embrace community enrichment and involvement.

Ready to volunteer?

We have many options for you to choose from! We keep our costs down because we do the work ourselves. This means that at some point you will probably be cleaning, digging, painting or take responsibility for organising something. Do you have special skills that you think we could use? We'd love to hear about them!

Your responsibilities:

The minimum expected of the Co-op members is:

  • to pay the housing charges in full and on time

  • to attend enough general members meetings, and to get enough information to be able to make intelligent decisions

  • to care for their own unit and associated space

  • to treat the rest of the community with respect

  • to contribute 4 hours per month, of volunteer participation.

How we live:

Friendly Neighbours!

We pride ourselves on the sense of community we feel here at Alexander MacKenzie.

It's our home and we love it.

Community involvement.

We encourage members to participate as volunteers to help promote a sense of ownership and community.

Together we work to maintain a safe and secure environment within the co-op.

Board and Membership:

Board - We are the watchers of the co-op, ensuring the legalities of running a co-op; making decisions on behalf of, and notifying the members of such actions.

Membership - We conduct the new member interviews and keep everyone up to speed on co-op policies, as well as everyone’s rights and responsibilities within the co-op.

Insurance and Pets:

Of course pets (some restrictions) are allowed! We do require you to register your pets with the office and to get their yearly shots and tags.

The Co-op will carry insurance on Co-operative property (the structures), and personal liability.

It will not carry insurance on your individual property (furnishings, clothes, automobile etc.). You are advised to purchase a householder's policy for your possessions.
